Galway became a European Region of Gastronomy in 2018 and is the first region in Ireland to be awarded the honour of this designation.
From The Ground Up – Feeding Our Future
The European Region of Gastronomy award recognises the rich landscape, food heritage, food producers, cultural diversity and the quality of produce presented in the wonderful restaurants of Galway, prepared by the hands of the many talented chefs. The Galway, West of Ireland European Region of Gastronomy programme aims to encourage all events and festivals in the region to showcase the best of local produce and to ensure that gastronomy is a central theme. Each food festival in the region has undertaken to commit to the European Region of Gastronomy programme with events during the year focusing on the five main themes of:
- Citizen inclusion
- Food education
- Promotion of SMEs and education
- Linking urban/rural
The Galway, West of Ireland European Region of Gastronomy programme will be launched on February 1st, Imbolc, also known as the Feast of Brigid. Details of the launch will be shared in the local media later in January.
